The Hearthstone Sterling HT is equipped with battery-powered pilot ignition. This feature makes lighting the
Sterling HT pilot quiet, easy, and very, very cool.
Before you begin: Locate the main burner switch near the bottom of the rear housing on the right side of the stove,
and toggle it to the middle (Off) position
 |
| | Manual On Position: Toggle Switch pushed in at top
Lights burners, overrides thermostat or remote control
|
| | Off Position: Toggle switch in middle position
Burners not lit, thermostat and remote disabled.
Light Pilot in this positon
|
| | Thermostat Position: Toggle Switch pushed in at bottom
Burners lit by wall thermostat or remote control
|
Now that the main burner toggle switch is in the Off position, you're ready to light the Pilot
|
| | Step 1: To light the safety pilot, first locate the control
knobs on top of the Sterling at the extreme right rear. There
are two knobs on the control panel; ignore the one on the
right for now; it is the burner flame height controller. The
one at the left (the on/off/pilot knob) is the one you're after.
You're about to light the pilot, which means it isn't already
lit, so the on/off/pilot knob will pointing to the rear (you can't
see it in this picture, but the word "Off" is printed on the
baseplate back there).
If you try to turn the on/off/pilot knob, you'll find it is locked
in place in the Off position. This holds true for the Pilot and
On positions as well. Our second step will be to release the
knob and turn it to the Pilot position.
|
| | | |
| | Step 2: Press down on the knob slightly. As you depress the
knob, you'll feel it slip out of the locking channel so it turns
freely. As soon as you feel it slip out of the locking channel,
maintain downward pressure while turning it toward the Pilot
position (1/4 turn counter-clockwise).
Turn the knob until the pointer points to Pilot, and release
the downward pressure. The knob will rise and lock into the
Pilot position.
If the knob doesn't rise all the way, depress it slightly while
turning it left and right a bit until you feel that it is centered
in the locking channel, and then release.
|
| | | |
| | Step 3: Position yourself so you can get a finger on the knob
while looking through the front viewing window. You should
be concentrating on the pilot assembly at the right rear
corner of the firebox.
Push down on the knob until it stops: this starts the flow of
gas to the pilot, while simultaneously activating the
battery-powered igniter. Looking through the viewing
window, you'll notice a white spark shooting onto the pilot
hood.
When the pilot ignites, maintain finger pressure on the knob
for at least 40 - 60 seconds to warm up the thermopile, then
remove your finger. If the pilot goes out, wait a few seconds
and repeat this step, holding finger pressure a little longer
until the pilot stays lit when your finger is removed.
|
| | | |
| | Step 4: Once you have determined that the pilot stays lit
when finger pressure is removed, depress the knob once
again, but this time only slightly to allow it to slip out of the
locking channel at the Pilot position.
When the knob turns freely, maintain slight downward
pressure while turning it 1/4 turn counter-clockwise to point
to On. Release pressure, and the knob will rise into the
locking channel at the On position.
Congratulations! You have successfully lit your pilot and
activated the main burner switch. It is necessary to leave
the knob in this position, pilot lit, throughout the heating
season so the pilot can light the main burners on demand
when you activate the manual switch, wall thermostat or
optional remote control.
|
Note: Before you started, you toggled the main burner switch to the "Off" position. Now that the pilot
is lit, you must toggle this switch to one of the two "On" positions before the pilot can light the burners.
Push in at the top for manual ignition, or at the bottom for thermostat or remote operation
