WOOD STOVE COMPARISON PAGE

Sorted By: SHIPPING WEIGHT

Sweepy

Big woodstoves are obviously heavier than small stoves, but when comparing two woodstoves of about the same size, more weight means greater thermal mass, which can be a big asset. Stoves made of heavy, high density materials tend to radiate heat in a gentler fashion over a longer period of time, making them nicer to be around and less needful of frequent refueling. Heavier materials also tend to be more durable.

Note: Thermal mass can be a good thing, but woodstove weight doesn't tell the whole story.

The heaviest stoves we carry are the Hearthstone models (Tribute, Phoenix, Heritage, Homestead, Mansfield), which are made of inch-and-a-quarter thick soapstone in a cast iron frame. Soapstone radiates heat in an extremely gentle fashion, and is nature's best heat storage material, so these stoves will continue to provide warmth hours after the fire has burned completely out.

While these attributes can certainly be advantageous, they come with a price. If your house is cold and you want to bring it up to temperature quickly, a cold soapstone stove will delay the process for an hour or so while the stone aborbs heat from the fire. Another drawback can evidence itself in milder weather, when you build a fire to take off the morning chill and then the day turns sunny. Be prepared to wait a couple of hours after you turn down the draft control before your soapstone stove begins to cool down.

Our plate steel and cast iron woodstove manufacturers also know the advantages of thermal mass, and build their stoves using thick plates and castings, often lined with heavy firebrick. These materials cannot duplicate the heat storage properties of soapstone (nothing can), but cast iron and plate steel, which share a heat transfer efficiency of around 85%, have the advantage of heating and cooling quickly to allow faster heat production and adjustment.
